If My People Prayed, Oh How the World Will Change!

II Chronicles 7:14 “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Psalm 77:6 I call to remembrance my song in the night; I meditate within my heart, and my spirit makes diligent search.

Duet 6:18;21 Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as front-lets between your eyes. 21 that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to them, like the days of the heavens above the earth.

I was watching a well-known teacher on television and he said, his father told him that he should say the Lord’s prayer before his initial prayer and he asked why. His father told him that it covers everything that could ever be prayed. That was two or three years ago. I just started applying it to my life more faithfully. The more I study the ‘Lord’s Prayer’, the more I say it, I know exactly why his father said it before every prayer. I don’t know exactly how he did it but I break it down in sections. I want to share this break down with you because one thing I know is that God is faithful and even my groaning, my tears, hurt is lifted up to him. In my Bible it has a titled section and Matthew 6:9-13 is labeled the model prayer. The model prayer is an example, a guide to how to do something. Prayer is a conversation between me and God and the only way to have a clear conversation with the Creator is to talk with him and listen.

A prayer life is very important for the relationship building that happens between you and God. Sometimes we talk throughout the whole prayer and never let the Lord answer back, we never listen to his instructions and all this is in the prayer that Jesus prayed for us to follow.

Verse 9, “In this manner therefore pray;

Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

When we go into someone’s house we greet them. In my grandma’s house when I go see her. I say hi and I give her a kiss to greet her. I’ve acknowledged her in her own house and honored her by loving on her. The beginning of this prayer does just the same. Stepping into prayer we should acknowledge Him, and be aware this is His house that we have come to have a conversation with Him. Hallowed (to make holy; greatly revered)* is letting it be known that He is respected, there is no one like Him. No God like my God. I go through a list of names and features that describe how He is to me. I may say that He is holy, merciful, loving, pure, righteous, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, omnipotent, etc. Every parent wants to be loved on as they love their children and I’m loving on Him, admiring Him for all that He has done for me and He didn’t have to do any of it for me.

Verse 10, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

I think I’ve been one of those who have never really paid attention to this scripture as I should have. God wants us to have the kingdom experience right here on earth. What is the kingdom? Romans 14:17 ‘for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.’ Galatians 5:22-23;25;5 says ‘the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 25; If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.  Going back to Galatians 5:5 it puts it simple. For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.’ God will show you how to have the kingdom experience on earth by the Spirit. Luke 17:21 “nor will they say, See here! or See there! For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”

Verse 11, “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Lord give me the instruction for my life this very day in each moment. Is exactly what I say along with this scripture. I will share the scriptures that I use along with this verse. Psalm 90:12 So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Proverbs 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. 1 Corinthians 2:10 “But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes the deep things of God.”

Verse 12, “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

Forgiveness is most important in this walk with God. It is the hardest thing to do at times because it is a spirit of offense that drives it. Saying this prayer has taught me to forgive daily and usually right after something happens because I don’t want anything or person, or myself blocking my prayers. I am young mom and I am also single. I blamed my mother for ruining my relationship with my son’s father. I also blamed my son’s father for hurting me after we tried to make it work and it didn’t because of other things. I was 17 and until about three years ago I let that rule over me. I took no responsibility and further more I hated my self for making a dumb decision, letting my morals fall, and just ‘messing up my future with someone I had no future with.’ As I grew in Christ and he revealed Himself to me, more and more, I took lessons instead of pain. I may stumble and fall but I will get back up. I learned to forgive not for anyone; because most times people have no clue you are holding anything against them. I learned to forgive so that I may prevail in the things of God, so that the hate that I had for others and myself could be let go and that He could cleanse me. Luke 17:3-4 Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”  Matthew 5:44-45 “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,’ that you may be sons if your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.  Matthews 6:14-15 goes further and bluntly says (paraphrased) Forgive others so that God can forgive you and if you don’t forgive others that sin against you, that He cannot forgive you of your sins and trespasses.

Verse 13, “And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one…’

1 Corinth 10:13 ‘ No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. In Genesis, God told Cain that sins desire was to have him but he should have rule over it. So if the Spirit is urging you to get out of a place you probably know you aren’t suppose to be. Be like Joseph and flee because when you resist, walk away from sin, like Jesus was able to overcome the temptations of the devil after being in the desert (Matthews 4). He will flee from you! He wants an easy battle, someone who will bend under his temptations but stand on the Word and that conviction of the Holy Spirit and you will be delivered from the evil one.

Verse 13…’ For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

All of it belongs to God. The Kingdom He is the One who sits on the Throne (Rev. 4:2-5). The power of (Job 9:4), belongs to Him. The glory belongs to Him (Isaiah 58:8) Forever. So be it!

Prayer changes us, it allows us to commune with the Father. Being open and honest and being yourself with God is okay. He knows every hurt, issue, and cry that you have. I’m learning every day, that no matter how busy I am even if it’s ten minutes instead of the two hours, that my prayer made a difference in my life, my child’s life, a complete strangers life. Prayer is like oxygen to me, I cannot live without it. It’s my lifeline and if I cut it off, I will surely die.

Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
